Mitgift-Dowry-Çeyiz 2024

The dowry, a tradition that dates back to ancient times, denotes all the handcrafted and valuable items, for example sewn and knitted ones, that parents often prepare for a woman already during her childhood. These items are the embodied, visible evidence of the social roles considered appropriate for a young girl in her future. The lace symbolizes a close family bond as well as separation and detachment. Yet the semi-transparent covers also conceal memories of the past, the reality of one’s own time and the hope for a future that is not predetermined. I cover my body with the ‘dowry’ lace that my mother has prepared for me.
