Karakter Bürünmek-Wrapping in a Character
Performance KulturBahnhof Südflügel, Kassel
In a performance framework, I cloth myself with multiple dresses, which I have collected from women representing different professions and social classes. These clothings I wear on top of each other, piece by piece. As l slip myself, one body, into another body, a thick layer of overlapping dresses bloom around me. Once dressed with each dress, I attempt to remove them all in one piece.
Once I remove the nested clothes off me, it creates with their volume a three-dimensional cocoon-like object – Leaving testimony to my existence and the existence of the women from whom the clothes were once worn.
While I had toured to different parts of the city, I met many women from different nations and cultures. I asked them for one of their daily used clothes and gathered them. I also asked them to write a letter related to the clothing they gave me. Without any restrictions of the content the letters are shown together with the clothes in the viewing space
Through the nature of this process a platform had been created where each of the participants were able to take action with their writings and find representation within the context of the performance.
After the piece is performed, the nested dresses represent as a whole the women who gave them to me. While each of the dresses take form over my body during the performance, each of the participants individuality and that of the artist also fused into each other, melting a new. The individual identity of the participants is preserved through the presence of the letters.
The performance I named “wrapping in a character”, which I performed in Kassel, Berlin and in Motes Claros, Brasil. Each location has different scenarios of installation, and vary through the culture and social dynamics of the city.
