The Cloth / Kıyafet

Flannel, autographed silk lining and buttons, size 36, 2015

She then ordered a classic tailored men’s wardrobe of floral fabric – a three-piece suit and shoes – in her size (Kiyafet, 2015). She wore the suit at her exhibition opening or had it worn by a woman of similar stature. The effect was doubly irritating. A woman wearing a man’s suit, and a suit of pazen (Turkish floral-print flannel). The two cannot coexist (at least for a proud Turkish man like the fictional Osman). Just like her rug, which shows the behinds of kneeing men during prayer (Cuma, 2010/2016/2018), this work is an attack on multiple traditional values, including the rules of the patriarchy.
